INTERNET FAQS What is a cable modem? A cable modem is a device that allows computers to communicate over the cable network and access the Internet. It provides high-speed access to the Internet by taking advantage of the huge information-carrying capacity of the cable TV infrastructure. What is the difference between a dial-up connection and a cable modem connection? The dial-up network requires a connection through an analog line to the modem pool prior to accessing the Internet. A cable modem connects to a digital signal on the cable network and is always on. Dial-up connections are generally in the 56K range whereas cable connections can be considerably faster. How fast is the connection for cable modem? NushTel currently has three high-speed cable Internet offerings: 64K, 128K and 256K. We also have a 56K standard dial-up phone connection available. Will the speed of my Internet connection fluctuate? The total bandwidth on NushTel’s cable system is shared by all cable modem users. High traffic on the system could possibly introduce some variance in bandwidth available to you at any given time. NushTel will continuously monitor the performance of its network and if we see a downgrade in service, we can add additional capacity to the network to maintain high standards of service. If I signed up for 128K service, shouldn’t my web browser show I’m downloading at 128K? First of all, the speed of your download is always dependent on the speed of the Internet connection at the server where the data is located. Second, the browser will report a download in kilobytes per second. One byte is equal to 8 bits per second (kbps); therefore, you must multiply the displayed speed times 8 to see how close your actual speed is to 128kbps. Is there a limit to how much I can download? Yes, there will be a throughput limit depending on which service you sign up for:
Do cable modems use a telephone line at all? No. If you have purchased a phone line for your dedicated dial-up Internet use, you can eliminate it and save the monthly fee. If I sign up for high-speed Internet, when will it be installed? Once all applications are complete a service order will be put in to the cable TV personal to check your lines. At the same time the cable modem will be programmed. Once the cable modem is programmed the Customer service representative will call and let you know that your cable modem is ready for pickup. The whole process should take less then 5 working days. Will there be a charge for installation? There is a charge of 38.05 + tax to activate cable services at your premises. If a technician is requested/required to make a visit to your home or special cabling is needed then applicable charges may apply. Do I need to sign up for cable TV in order to get cable modem Internet? No. But you will need to have a cable connection to your home computer and if you do not presently have one, you will be charged for the installation. You might be wise to check out the bundle prices for both cable TV and high speed Internet. You can truly save a bundle if you sign up for both packages and save some of the installation fees too. Can my kids watch cable TV while I surf the Internet with my cable modem? Certainly. Even though the digital television programming and the Internet travel along the same cable, you can use both simultaneously. How can I tell if my computer is cable modem compatible? It should have an Ethernet network card installed along with TCP/IP networking protocol in the operating system. Most modern computers have these systems in place. Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0 and Mac OS 7.5x come with support for TCP/IP. We strongly recommend that your computer have a Pentium 166 or greater processor and at least 16MB of RAM. Will I have to purchase a cable modem? NushTel will lease a modem to you at a nominal fee of $5/month. What if I don’t want to lease a cable modem from Nushagak? If you choose you can install your own cable modem you will be responsible for any incompatibility issues with the Nushagak network and we will not repair a privately-owned modem. When you sign up for service you will need to bring your modem to our office for authentication with our network. Our cable modem system runs on the DOCSIS 1.0 standard. For those wishing to purchase a cable modem for there own use please make sure it is certified by Cable Labs to meet the DOCSIS 1.0 standard. Follow this link for a listing of cable modems that meet this standard. http://www.cablemodem.com/downloads/Certified_Products.pdf Once the modem is Installed, how do I get to the Internet? Simply click on your Internet browser or mail software and you’ll be there. Can I use a firewall or proxy server with my cable modem Internet connection? Yes, as long as the firewall or proxy server can accept a DHCP IP address. Can I access my email when I am traveling or not at my cable modem computer? Yes. Go to www.nushtel.com and check your email from any computer with an Internet connection. Will I be allowed to host web services or FTP services? No. Can other computers on the cable modem system see my computer? Yes it is possible. However, Internet security is the user’s responsibility and you should review the standard security measures you can take to protect your privacy. The following web resources can provide further details on securing your particular operating system or application: http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.asp http://www.cablemodemhelp.com/privacy.htm Can other computers on the cable modem system access resources on my computer? It is possible if you have services running that enable this and your security settings allow it. It is important to note that many of the default settings in operating systems such as Windows 95 and Windows 98 allow this type of access to some degree. How can I protect my computer from malicious users? In the most general terms, if you do not have file sharing, printer sharing, web server, or mail server services that utilize the TCP/IP protocol running on your computer, you can expect no problems. Client applications such as web browsers, e-mail readers, newsgroup readers, etc. do not open your computer to other users. If my cable Internet stops working, who do I contact? You will contact NushTel Internet, your friendly member-owned Internet Service Provider. We have standard business hours but you can report your problem at any hour of the day. A technician will determine if a call-out is necessary for a network problem or if the problem is possibly with your computer. Customer service is the cooperative’s Number One business. We want your Internet experience to be positive and fun! What is transmission latency? Latency refers to the time it takes for signals to travel to and from your computer to the internet. With satellites this time is increased. Because we live in a remote area we have to utilize satellites for our internet and they typically create a sub-second lag. For this reason, NushTel Cable Internet may not be ideal for playing some "twitch-games" like QuakeT or Half-LifeT What are my PC system requirements? The minimum PC requirements for NushTel Cable are Pentium 233 MHz or faster
Yes, but additional equipment will be needed that Nushagak dosn't supply and can't support. |
